THE LODGE BANNER

L109 banner

Banners have been long associated with methods and means of attracting attention. Masonic banners fall under the category of ‘Civil banners’ to distinguish them from banners of other organisations and associations. The banner of a lodge is a source of identity. Each lodge has its own special banner depicting its origin, motto and often the date of consecration.

Lodge Reginald Spence No. 109 has its own distinctive and unique banner. The motto is ‘DUM - SPIRO – SPERO’ which when translated, means ‘While I Breathe, I Hope’

Unity, Love and Harmony are the 3 Masonic principles by which the Lodge functions and these are also found on the banner. It also depicts the Celestial Canopy with the Sun at its meridian, the All Seeing Eye and the Moon surrounded by Seven Stars indicating that seven freemasons are required to make a lodge perfect. On the Square Pavement rest the Working Tools of a master mason and the Rough and the Smooth Ashlars. On the square pavements are two columns of Corinthian design, Boaz and Jachin. These columns are adorned by two chapiters. These chapiters are exquisitely enriched with network, lilywork and pomegranates.

These pillars are further adorned with two spheres on which are delineated maps of celestial and terrestrial globes pointing out ‘Masonry Universal’. On the pillars are inscribed names of the founder members of the lodge. The motto is surmounted a lion wearing a crown which is the symbol of the British Empire as the lodge was consecrated in English Constitution.
